The Axis allies were not... the best of bedfellows. Nevertheless, in summing up the Italians to [his son] Manfred, Rommel made a not ungenerous and refreshingly un-German remark. "Certainly they are no good at war," he said. "But one must not judge everyone in the world only by his qualities as a soldier: otherwise we should have no civilisation."
--German General Erwin Rommel, quoted in Rommel, the Desert Fox (1950), by Desmond Young
And phrases like "The German soldier has impressed the world, however the Italian Bersagliere soldier has impressed the German soldier", are invented?

the quote is:
Good soldiers, bad officers; however don't forget that without them we would not have any Civilization.

The quotation is from the book Rommel, the Desert Fox. Do you have a better source or the original German?
