I knew an old Kerryman who, before dying at the age of a hundred, told me in Irish (he knew no English) that he had spent six months on board a sailing-ship trying to get to America; the ship had been blown three times across the Atlantic and three times back, without ever touching the American shore, so he never landed there at all!
