The most beautiful
The great bell of the cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris, which is called Emmanuel, weighs 13 metric tons and its clapper 488 kg. It dates from 1686. It was made by the celebrated foundryman Florent LeGuay in the 17th century. Its very pure musicality was heard for eleven hours in a row on the day of the Armistice, November 11th, 1918.

La plus belle
Le bourdon de Notre-Dame de Paris, dite Emmanuel, ses 13 t et son battant de 488 kg, qui datent de 1686, ont été conçus par le célèbre fondeur du XVIIe siècle, Florent LeGuay. Sa très pur musicalité s’est fait entendre onze heures d’affilée pour l’armistice du 11 novembre 1918.

Note from Sedulia: When I read this on the airplane, I suddenly found tears springing to my eyes. Imagine the sorrow and despair that made ending the war so joyful that the huge bell rang over the city for eleven hours without stopping.
