Bury Saint Edmunds, Norman gate to old abbey

Bury Saint Edmunds, Norman gate to old abbey

The abbey at Bury Saint Edmunds was a great pilgrimage center in the middle ages, dedicated to the memory of a Saxon king martyred by Danish invaders. It was one of the largest abbeys in Europe until it was destroyed under Henry VIII. The Norman gate is all that remains intact, but the old abbey ruins are now a beautiful park in the center of the pretty little town.
