Bury Saint Edmunds, Suffolk, Abbey ruins
A Saxon king was martyred here by the Vikings and one of the largest abbeys in Europe grew up on the spot, as pilgrims streamed in during the Middle Ages. Henry VIII put a stop to all that. Now the ruins are surrounded by a lovely park and a pretty little town.
