Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia-- formerly Port Royal, Acadie

My French ancestors, described while living here in Acadia as "the happiest people on earth", were among 10,000 people deported from this beautiful place by the British in an early "ethnic cleansing" in 1755. Families were separated and put on different boats to different destinations in British colonies further south (where they were unwanted). Their possessions and land were given to English settlers.

Many of them made their way to Louisiana, and that is the origin of the Cajuns.
