Frankfurt was the "ford of the Franks" or the "free ford," and was near the northern frontier of the Roman Empire. Charlemagne held meetings here, and the kings of Germany and the Holy Roman Empire were elected, and after 1562 crowned, here, in the Cathedral or "Dom" which you see in the background, covered in scaffolding.
